Leaping Ahead With Risk Management: Keynote at WeDo KL 2016

Today I have the honor of giving a keynote presentation at WeDo Technologies’ Kuala Lumpur 2016 conference. By the magic of the internet, you can follow events at the conference using the Twitter hashtag #WDCKL16. And combining the power of this website with Google makes it easy for me to share the presentation slides with you.

The title of my talk is “How Asia Can Leap Ahead by Transforming Risks into Opportunities”, and the content will be built on the idea that societies tend to go through a burst of economic, technological, business and cultural change when they receive the demographic dividend. The dividend phase occurs as life expectancy extends, reproduction rates fall, and so the number of working-age adults reaches a maximum relative to the number of children and elderly.

Because many AsiaPac countries have entered or will soon enter their demographic dividend phase, it is possible that major innovations in risk management are more likely to originate in AsiaPac than in the Western countries that are traditionally considered to be leaders in risk management. I will discuss problems with some of the orthodox risk management techniques in common use today, and the need and potential for a paradigm shift in how corporations use data to address risk. This will draw upon recent and historic examples of innovation that challenge preconceptions about which nations are pioneers of assurance and risk mitigation.

The presentation slides contain various interesting graphs, quotes and anecdotes, and can be viewed below.
