5G Security, Robocalls, and Seeking Innovation in Revenue Assurance: Episode 6 of The Commsrisk Show

Can we coordinate international action to secure 5G? Telecoms cybersecurity expert Silke Holtmanns shared her views.

We like to have the best industry experts on The Communications Risk Show but it is a rare privilege to welcome a new participant with as much expertise as yesterday’s guest, Silke Holtmanns. At different points in her career, Silke has:

  • done security research for Ericsson, Nokia and Bell Labs;
  • been the Head of 5G Security Research at Enea AdaptiveMobile Security;
  • served as a security advisor to the GSMA and the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA); and
  • she is currently employed as a 5G Security Expert by PwC.

Silke is also a lot of fun to talk to! Many other parts of society have grown reliant on comms networks, and 5G will prompt sectors like transportation and utilities to depend on them even more. It is vital that we transition to a new understanding of the risks associated with network security vulnerabilities. Communications firms now have responsibilities that extend beyond connecting phone calls, and we have to behave accordingly. So it is a boon to have level-headed individuals like Silke to help guide us in the right direction.

The presenting team also debated other topical issues, like the recent surge in US robocalls reported by the YouMail Robocall Index, and not-so-topical issues, such as the difficulty of finding anyone with something new to say about revenue assurance.

Whatever your views, you can always join the conversation by using the messaging system at tv.commsrisk.com during each Wednesday livestream. But if you missed yesterday’s show then you can watch the recording below.
