Diameter Attacks Detected, Claims AdaptiveMobile

SS7 weaknesses are well-known, but AdaptiveMobile says this is the first time that attacks on the Diameter signaling protocol have been proven to occur.

In a press release issued last week, network security experts AdaptiveMobile claimed to be the first business to have demonstrably detected attacks performed using the Diameter signaling protocol. The announcement stated that AdaptiveMobile…

…performed analysis of international Diameter traffic from ten operators’ networks worldwide and found suspicious activity within them. The research conducted analysed Diameter traffic travelling to and from more than 80 countries across five continents and detected a range of malicious activity, from simple to complex, over Diameter networks, affecting both mobile subscribers and mobile networks.

Given the concerns currently being raised about SS7 vulnerabilities, AdaptiveMobile may find themselves able to exploit fears that the hardening of defenses surrounding SS7 may lead protagonists to focus more effort on exploiting weaknesses with Diameter.

AdaptiveMobile shared plenty of other news last week. They announced they have enrolled three customers for what they describe as “the world’s first global signalling intelligence and analytics cloud service”. They also trumpeted a deal with an unnamed African group, saying it would result in AdaptiveMobile’s Messaging Revenue Assurance product being used in 10 more business units.
