Have you ever seen a business that made a mistake? Duh. Of course. I work in RA/fraud/risk etc. I deal with the consequences of mistakes all the time. Especially the mistakes made by those stupid people in Marketing/IT/our outsourced supplier etc. Have you ever made a mistake yourself? Err…. yeah, I suppose. A few. Not many. What mistakes will you make next week? None. Stupid question. Exactly. The psychology of being right and wrong is an impediment to being right, and leads us to be even more wrong. Hey talkRA fans,
I totally get Kathryn Schulz’s message. Errors are all around us: operational errors, management stupidity, and our own dumb mistakes. But we need to embrace our errors! If we’re not making mistakes, maybe we’re trying to sit on our past accomplishments.
Just came back from the TMF conference in Orlando where I got a chance to interview Kathy Romano from Verizon. As many of you know, Kathy recently left her RA executive role at Verizon’s FiOS business and is now heading up Verizon’s Payments function across the entire Verizon business. It’s a big and highly interesting job for her. Sure enough: she’s finding her Revenue Assurance skills were wonderfully transferable to this new post. Hopefully — if the public relations gods are merciful — I’ll soon publish my discussion with Kathy on Black Swan.
Now on the subject of skills transfer and RA careers, I wanted to point talkRA fans to the wonderful (and super long) interview I held with Eric Priezkalns. The article is entitled Please Mishandle My Telecom Job and my Professional Career. Check it out. This is the High Priezt at his finest!
