Commsrisk enjoyed a significant rise in traffic between July and August. Much of this came from China and other East Asian countries. Automated translation and the tendency for young people to seek answers through LLMs rather than traditional search is making it easier for new audiences to discover our content.
The addition of the Global Fraud Dashboard is having a profound impact on the reach of Commsrisk. Analyzing its performance as a landing page shows how it is contributing to an increased number of visits from the majority of countries worldwide, and to the increased length of time that visitors remain on the website. It is no exaggeration to say the dashboard is prompting the most sustained growth in the audience for Commsrisk since the pandemic. Providing unfiltered statistics from around the world is also driving increased traffic to those articles which reference the charts on the dashboard. There is evidently a lot of appetite for more robust data than anyone had previously made available in one place.
The other factor that drove a lot of additional traffic to Commsrisk during August is the explosion in the number of smishing SMS blasters being seized by police in various countries. I wrote in 2023, following the discovery of smishing SMS blasters circulating Paris, about bad actors exploiting new ways to spy and to steal because law enforcement and comms providers are so willing to lag behind. Success is being measured by the reduction of crimes after they were allowed to grow unchecked. Now the mainstream media is delivering a glut of stories about the supposedly ‘new’ threat posed by SMS blasters when they should be asking why known threats to the public can be ignored for so long.
