Contribute to European Union Research on Spoofing and Traceback

Commsrisk has been asked to conduct research on behalf of the European Union into methods that prevent the spoofing of electronic communications and enable communications to be traced to their origin.

Commsrisk is conducting research on behalf of the European Union into spoofing prevention and traceback. This is your chance to recommend any relevant method and explain how it works, what is required to deploy it, and its advantages and disadvantages.

The European Commission uses the term “Brussels effect” to describe how multinational businesses adopt European requirements more widely because of the size of the market and the regulatory power that accompanies it. That is why this research matters: decisions informed by this work could affect how communications are secured across a market of around 450mn people in 27 countries and influence policy and practice elsewhere.

Commsrisk previously reported how international traceback may stop at jurisdictional boundaries, even when the technical route can be followed. Similar shortcomings would have far greater consequences if repeated throughout the European Union or copied elsewhere.

Anyone may contribute, either as a private individual or on behalf of an organisation. Responses are welcome from inside and outside the European Union, and respondents need only answer the sections relevant to their knowledge or experience.

Please complete the survey by 11 August 2026. Responses received after that date may be excluded from the findings provided to the European Union.
