Commsrisk Top Ten for February 2024

Can you guess which story with global implications for the telecoms industry generated most traffic for Commsrisk last month?

There was a surge of traffic to Commsrisk during February in the wake of the UK’s decision to reject STIR/SHAKEN, the US standards for governing the validation of CLIs. This has effectively killed the hopes of American vendors who thought the backing of the US comms regulator would ensure their expensive but ineffective technology would become mandatory worldwide. Audiences typically show some bias towards stories involving their own country, so it was telling that this article topped the charts not just in the UK and USA, but also in France, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Russia, Israel, South Africa and a whole lot of other countries. Most exceptions to this rule were found in Latin America, where phone users were denied some services following a cyberattack on an international telecoms group, whilst Kenyans continue to be drawn to an older story about money lending apps raiding contact data to publicly humiliate late payers. The tiny minority of US readers who complain that I should give more positive coverage to their inane attempt to hijack the goal of consumer protection just so they can gouge money from the rest of the planet are invited to read a few stories about the problems faced by people in other countries for a change.
