Commsrisk Top Ten for January 2021

The rundown of the most popular Commsrisk articles during January unexpectedly demonstrated that some things are more important than business.

Some things matter more than business. That may seem a peculiar way to begin a short summary of the most popular articles on a business-oriented website during the month of January, but I want to draw attention to the article that comes sixth in the chart. It was published December 25th, 2019, meaning it is a year older than all the other articles in this list. The subject of that article is loneliness.

I follow a strict policy for publishing articles on Commsrisk so everyone knows what to expect: there are five articles each week, one per day from Monday to Friday, because that is the working week in most countries. Articles are always published at 6am UTC so everyone can read them on the same day, even if their time zones are far apart. Commsrisk publishes articles on public holidays because a holiday in one country is still a working day in another. However, there are days like Christmas Day when profits, controls, errors and risks seem unimportant.

For Christmas Day 2020 I wrote about my unsung heroes of the year, which was an upbeat way of focusing on the human souls behind professional appearances. It is chastening that so many have since chosen to read the Christmas Day article about loneliness from the year before. Some people had a hard 2020 and enter the new year in low spirits. Please take time to speak to your peers. They may worry about how to pay their bills, or just need the comfort of somebody else’s voice.

I am grateful for the time you spend reading Commsrisk and always recognize that your time is valuable. The value of your time is why taking a few minutes out of your regular routine to call a former colleague, perhaps to offer help to someone searching for a job, or simply to chat about old times, will mean so much to them.
