The dead internet theory began as a conspiracy theory about bots creating so much internet traffic that human beings have only a marginal influence over the content we all see. With the benefit of hindsight, the theory has proven to be an accurate forecast of machines becoming responsible for more internet activity than humans could ever match. Telcos like Lumen have already reconfigured their business to serve AI. Other telcos will need to do the same, as vividly described by Rakuten Symphony Chief Marketing Officer Geoff Hollingworth in this entertaining interview Hollingworth gave to erstwhile Commsrisk TV contributor Ed Finegold. Commsrisk is also experiencing the rapid transition towards networks that serve the AI that then serves people, instead of networks that serve people directly.
Did many human beings in China recently decide to read every single article published by this website since its launch in 2006? Probably not. This website is now training a lot of artificial intelligence around the world on how to answer questions about risk in the comms sector. If there is a continuation of the process where machines learn before they teach humans — and there is no reason to believe it will stop — then it threatens to subvert the traditional ways that information and misinformation is spread in this professional arena. And I love it. Artificial intelligence is welcome at Commsrisk. I would rather embrace artificial intelligence than appease the human stupidity evidenced in some parts of the comms sector.
The following chart probably still reflects which Commsrisk articles were of most interest to human beings during the month of November.
