Finding My Freedom: A Letter of Thanks

Dear Commsrisk readers,

There are moments, in the midst of difficult times, when we are reminded how lucky we are. The beginning days of April 2019 were such times for me. Those who have followed the news know that I was arrested and remanded in custody in Tanzania. I cannot share my full side of the story here and now – I certainly do hope a time will come when the opportunity to do so shall present itself.

What I can do, for now, is to thank many of you who found time to check on me via mail, texts, phone calls and/or just saying a kind word about me somewhere. It meant so much to me during those dark times. Just hearing that somebody believed in me was all I needed to keep going. My family also deeply appreciates this community for the support we got.

I also want to let all of you know that I am still passionate about what I do. I think revenue assurance and fraud management people work under difficult circumstances. I never expected one of those difficulties would involve enjoying a state-sponsored Airbnb :) but hey, it happened. We are living in interesting times.

Now I have two choices:

  • Become despondent because of what happened and find something else to do, away from telecommunications. I do have choices, after all.
  • Use this as a learning opportunity, believing that it made me stronger, and continue to work with you fine people.

Truth be told, I cannot make a long term decision because times do change. However, I can confirm that for now, I am staying the course and will still be part of the revenue assurance community.

I look forward to continuing to interact with you fine folks here at Commsrisk and also at RAG events.

There is still work to be done.

Sincerely,
Joseph Nderitu
