Recent articles by Covesia and detiknews suggest that Indonesians have suffered an increase in wangiri calls. The Covesia piece talks about inhabitants of the island of Sumatra receiving multiple calls with a +882 code prefix, as described in the following translated extract:
A resident of Padang, Metha (31) admitted that in the past two days there had been three missed calls by telephone numbers beginning with +882.
“I don’t know from whom. The telephone number is not the provider number in Indonesia,” Metha said…
Another resident, Rudi (31), also experienced the same thing. He claimed to have missed a call from the number with the same prefix (+882) today.
“Last afternoon my cellphone rang once, continued to die. Only missed calls for a while,” he said.
The +882 range is dedicated to services that cover multiple countries. Covesia published a screengrab from a user’s phone that indicates the numbers begin +882 16, which is a range used by Thuraya, a UAE-based provider of mobile satellite comms.
