Launching Live Streaming TV for Telco Risk Managers

The future is increasingly online. Thoughtful people have long acknowledged the need for a significant reduction in unnecessary journeys, but the events of this year have sharpened everyone’s focus. Societies will save time, money and energy by using technology to communicate remotely. Telephones have been around for a long time, but change will finally accelerate because younger generations have grown up developing new kinds of social skills relevant to successful communication at a distance. Some of their parents will remain inflexible, but it will be difficult to resist an economic dynamic which will keep making electronic communication cheaper and more accessible, whilst travel becomes more expensive and exclusive. And the blowhards in rich Western countries who like to talk about equal opportunities for everyone in the global village, but who assume the rest of the world should always travel to them, will have their assumptions wrecked by the Asian and African professionals who will leapfrog ahead. This is the context for the first season of RAG Television, a series of shows that will feature topical chat with experts in telecoms risk and business assurance from around the world, and which will be streamed live. Each live show will also be recorded and then made available on demand.

Lee Scargall, a widely experienced enterprise risk consultant and occasional Commsrisk author, will join me for the live shows on consecutive Wednesdays throughout April. Together we will interview some the leaders of the field, including:

  • Colin Yates, one of the world’s foremost authorities on international revenue share fraud, will talk about the ways he is helping Europol to hunt down criminals. He will speak from his home in New Zealand, illustrating how this online channel will deliver information and advice that is rarely shared at conferences.
  • Kenyan RAFM consultant Joseph Nderitu will share his first-hand experience of the consequences of corruption in the telecoms sector.
  • Jeffrey Ross, COO of GBSD Technologies, will participate from Texas, USA, where he will share his insights into the international implications of North America adopting the STIR/SHAKEN protocols to authenticate A-numbers and so prevent them being spoofed.
  • Arnd Baranowski, CEO of Oculeus, will join us from Germany. He is focused on the ways SIP changes the risk environment for telcos, and how artificial intelligence and machine learning could be used in conjunction with SIP to prevent fraudulent calls being connected.
  • Tony Sani was the boss of RAFM at MTN Group, a leading African telco group, and now runs his own business, Orillion Solutions. Tony will discuss using the distributed power of blockchain technologies to exchange data between telcos and the attributes that make blockchain especially suited to collating intelligence about wangiri fraud.
  • Ray Green, Director at Focus Data, will join us from the historic British county of Oxfordshire. He will share his views on data-driven investigations and the methods of sharing information.

The full schedule of shows, including the times in various timezones, can be seen here.

RAG has long recognized the need to make better use of the internet when seeking to provide telecoms risk professionals with the resources they need. That is why RAG has provided free internet-based training for two years already. That is also why the RAG website offers far more free and downloadable content than that of rivals. And that is why the content is not hidden behind paywalls that lure the unwary into paying money just to discover how little they will receive in exchange. Unlike the webinars being touted by organizations now scrambling to reinvent their marketing strategy, episodes of RAG Television will not be long boring adverts, and anyone will be able to watch them without needing to register in advance.

The live streams and recorded episodes of RAG Television will all be made available from a dedicated portal on the RAG website. ‘Episode zero’ has already been streamed, with me giving a short illustration of how the streaming technology works in practice, and how viewers can ask questions in real time.
