Lookout’s Cybersecurity Predictions 2016-19

Lookout is a mobile security business that specializes in using predictive techniques. So it is appropriate that every year they make predictions about the future landscape of cybersecurity. In their latest report, CTO Kevin Mahaffey identifies some very interesting trends for the next three years. Here are four of them.

  • Differences between mobile devices and PCs will disappear, so the operating software and security architecture will be the same, and the only obvious distinction will be the size of the screen.
  • Network perimeters will be re-designed as multiple micro-perimeters, each surrounding distinct applications and data stores, instead of trying to maintain a single perimeter around all corporate resources.
  • Though it will upset some security vendors, cybersecurity will increasingly be measured in terms of risk mitigation, instead of counting the number of security solutions that have been implemented.
  • Password-based authentication is inadequate, and we will come to rely on smartphones to provide multi-factor authentication.
