# Nigerian Masts Come Under Attack

Nigerian police have been called in to defend mobile phone masts after dozens were destroyed by Islamist militants. You can read the Reuters story [here](http://uk.reuters.com/article/2012/09/07/uk-nigeria-violence-idUKBRE8860V820120907?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews). The scale of the damage is unusual, but the events reflect how telcos provide a vital service to the community, whilst also offering a potential military and terrorist target. Mobile operators need to assess the security of their infrastructure, and should maintain contingency plans for its rapid repair and replacement.
