Phone Companies Accused of Defrauding US Government

Government waste is a hot-button issue in US politics. Bill O’Reilly, the popular right-wing TV pundit, recently covered accusations that ‘private phone companies’ are complicit in ‘ripping off the American taxpayer’. In one segment on his nightly show, O’Reilly discussed how the US government’s Lifeline program subsidizes the distribution of mobile phones to citizens on low incomes. The show played covert recordings of companies giving phones to recipients who openly state they will violate the rules of the Lifeline program, by reselling the phone.
