Watch Episode 1 of The Communications Risk Show

After months of preparation, yesterday saw the first livestream in the new weekly 13-episode series of The Communications Risk Show. If you missed it then watch the video below.

Business advisor Joseph Nderitu was our main guest, appearing live from his home in Kenya. Joseph spoke about the government corruption that affected him and his former colleagues at Vodacom Tanzania before revealing that most of the money extorted as bogus fines by the government of deceased President John Magufuli has disappeared without any record of how it was spent. Joseph reflected on how his Tanzanian experience compared with the treatment and mistreatment of telcos in other countries around East Africa, and also commented on other ways Africans are exploited through the abuse of phone networks by national authorities. This was followed by a short interview with US-based regulatory consultant Sossina Tafari on how to maintain balance between regulators, telcos and the public.

Regular hosts Lee Scargall and Ed Finegold also joined me in stirring conversation about:

  • Elon Musk’s decision to stop two-factor authentication by SMS for non-paying Twitter users
  • The purpose of the International Telecommunication Union and if it is fulfilled in practice
  • Whether the USA needs to act as the ‘global police’ of telecoms corruption
  • The ease with which hackers compromise the data and systems of comms providers

That is a lot to cover in just a single hour! See for yourself using the embedded player below, and visit tv.commsrisk.com for details of future episodes.
