Why Telecoms Fraud Is Like a Virus

The pandemic has demonstrated the extent to which events in one part of the world can rapidly lead to consequences for people everywhere. Telecoms fraud has an analogous nature; we use a Japanese word for wangiri fraud because that kind of fraud did not remain specific to Japan. This week’s episode of RAG TV featured Jacqueline Fick, a tough and smart woman whose career has involved pursuing some of South Africa’s worst criminals, rooting out fraudsters inside telcos, and chairing the GSMA Africa Fraud Forum. Now she gives advice and training to an international clientele wanting to know how to prevent cybercrime and how to prosecute those cybercrimes that still occur. We spoke about the analogies between a fraud and a virus, and also about the impact that home working is having on the risk landscape.
